The Summer Of 2000

on

To the long lost summer friend,

Do you remember the summer of 2000? I was visiting my grandparents like every year but this time it was different, you had moved in next door. Do you remember the first day we met? My brother had kicked the football so hard it ended up in your backyard. Do you remember I came to get that ball wearing my little pink skirt? You had a pink tee on and said, “Same pinch”! Yes, I remember the first words you ever said to me but do you remember how I asked you to play on the swing in our backyard? You felt giddy on the first go and asked me if we could play inside. I remember how I sheepishly told you that I didn’t bring any dolls with me. Do you remember how you invited me over to play with yours instead? I still remember my mom gave me some pennies to get you an ice cream for being so kind. Do you remember we promised to meet every summer, every year? But the next summer I learnt you had moved again. I still remember how it broke my heart but do you remember I called your new number one afternoon? You never came on the phone…

I still remember the ice cream, the swing and the dolls. But do you remember the summer of 2000?

-The girl who still remembers you
