Staring at the blank canvas, she stands with paints around her. It was a beautiful sunset right outside her window. But today nothing could inspire her to pick up the brushes. Lying on the table with the palette was a form that would admit her to medical school. But did she want that? Her father wanted to see her in a white coat but she saw herself with a white canvas. Was she giving in? No. She picked it up with strength now, to make a bold painting. A trigger pulled, a loud sound followed and the canvas was painted !

This is so relatable and painful. I hope the trigger was of spray paint and the sound was the audience applauding to the fine art by her. Quite intense, keep writing!

That is so tragic, Yamini. It is happening here too, but likely not as much as in India. But the children doing it are getting younger and younger. So truly sad. Excellent writing as always.

Parental control is a lot more in India and children often kill their dreams to fulfill their parents’. But somewhere down the road they give up because the longing to be what they want to be increases. The end result is not pretty and they all pay for the mistakes!

Powerfully written story about parental pressure on their children.
I was pressured by my mother to become a lawyer instead of a teacher like I wanted to be.
The end result was I wound up becoming neither.

Yes, I knew a man here in the U.S., and he had defied his parents’ wishes for him to do something more into business, but instead he became a fantastic photographer. He took photos of Jane Goodall when she visited the U.S. in California. I think he had a lot of those feelings of being mixed up because he did what he did and his parents pretty much avowed that he was not their child any longer. I think that is paramount to child abuse, even though he is an adult now. The sad thing is that people are so limited in their vision of what a person should or should not do with their lives.
My own parents here in the U.S. did not want me to do any of the things I wanted to do as an adult, though I did live in a different generation (I am going on 78 now). For a long time, it really affected me, but I finally got to go to a university and ended up getting two different degrees from two different universities and had good careers and my own businesses that I ran successfully, so I guess I was one of the lucky ones. It does happen here in the U.S. too, sadly, and more than you would think.

Parental expectations are a truth of this society in general and does not so much depend on the country. It is sad that parents often forget that they don’t own the lives of their children just because they gave them life! I feel strongly for the youngsters who succumb to parental pressure and never live a life that they truly deserved!
