The Indian Beauty

Worse than trapped in handcuffs
I am arrested in my bangles

Worse than choked in a loop
I am strangled by my choker

Worse than twisting my ears
I am bled down by my earrings

Worse than bound in chains
I am held down with my anklet

Worse than suffocated by pillow
I am stifled by my nose ring

Worse than living as a woman
I am an Indian woman

I think this is a poem I shall remember for a long while. You have such a strong message regarding the insensitive and often cruel restraints a male-privileged culture places on women. You also have a strong spirit. Thank you Yamini for sharing this.

The male dominated society has found its own way to curb the spirit of women. But we want to break free and this is an attempt to voice what’s in our minds. And thank you so much for the lovely feedback.

We still have the freedom dear to wear or not wear ornaments. I have said my parents strongly that I don’t wear anything which cause me discomfort and they accepted me. I wear a weightless small earring and a pendent when I go out. When I’m at home, I don’t wear them πŸ™‚

This is not just about wearing ornaments. My poem throws light on the fact that Indian society wants to curb the freedom of its women and weigh them down in a way that looks “pleasing” to the eye.

As an Indian woman, I can understand it dear. Many things of society is really hard to change, but certain things we can make change with ourselves and with the women we know by being with them, motivating them, empowering them, telling them the truth of many beliefs, etc. etc., and at the same time not affected by ego or hating men for few men who made the rules of our society from old time till now.
